Objective of the Scheme:
The goal is:
- Install rooftop solar panels on 1 crore (10 million) homes
- Provide up to 300 units of free electricity per month
- Reduce electricity bills for households
- Promote clean and renewable energy in India
Who can Apply?(Eligibility):
You are eligible if:
- You are an Indian citizen
- You have a residential house with roof space
- You have a valid electricity connection in your name
- You have not already taken a solar subsidy under another scheme
- You have permission/NOC if house is rented or jointly owned
Subsidy Details:
The government gives Central Financial Assistance (CFA) based on system size:
# Subsidy structure:
- 1 kW system → ₹30,000
- 2 kW system → ₹60,000
- 3 kW or more → ₹78,000 (maximum limit)
➕ Extra benefits (some states):
Many states also give additional ₹10,000–₹30,000 subsidy on top of central subsidy.
Electricity Benefits:
- You can get up to 300 units/month free electricity
- Excess solar power can be sent to the grid (net metering)
- You may even earn credit on extra electricity
🪜 Steps to Apply:
Step 1: Registration
Go to official portal:
- Register using mobile number + electricity consumer number
Step 2: Apply for Rooftop Solar
- Fill details of your house
- Select system size (1kW – 3kW+)
Step 3: Choose Vendor
- Select government-approved solar installer
Step 4: Installation
- Solar panels installed on your roof
- Net meter installed by electricity board
Step 5: Inspection & Subsidy
- DISCOM inspection
- Subsidy transferred directly to your bank account (DBT)
Required Documents:
- Aadhaar card
- Electricity bill
- Bank passbook
- Proof of ownership (property papers)
- Passport photo
- Mobile number linked to Aadhaar
System Types:
1.On-grid system (most common)
- Connected to electricity grid
- No battery needed
- Cheapest option
2. Hybrid system
- Grid + battery backup
- Works during power cuts
3. Off-grid system
- Fully battery-based
- Rare under subsidy
Cost (Before and after Subsidy):
Example (approx):
3 kW system cost: ₹1.8–2.5 lakh
Subsidy: ₹78,000
Final cost: ~₹1–1.7 lakh (depending on state)
Benefits of Scheme:
- Big reduction in electricity bill
- Long-term savings (20–25 years system life)
- Environment-friendly clean energy
- Increase property value
- Low maintenance
Limitations:
- Requires good sunlight on roof
- Approval process can take time
- Net metering depends on state DISCOM rules
- Battery backup not included in basic subsidy system
